Iodine is an incredibly important mineral for thyroid health and women’s health in general. We use it with many of our clients and have a lot of our Master Your Minerals course students include it as well. The most important thing to do before using iodine is to make sure it’s a good fit for you. Let’s talk about how to do that!
Before you implement iodine, it’s important to understand if it’s a good fit for you. Here are the populations we find do really well with iodine:
The next area you want to consider is what your current stress load is and if you’re eating enough. Under eating is a huge stressor in itself, so we typically have people start there. When we start taking iodine and its cofactors, it will increase the amount of iodine available for use in the body. This means you have more iodine to create more thyroid hormone, which is important and helpful when an iodine deficiency is present.
An increase in metabolism is a good thing IF we have the minerals and energy to back it up. We have to earn the right to supplement with iodine. This is not where we start on a healing journey, it’s something we use after we already have a solid foundation.
We want to make sure we are eating enough and have been supporting minerals for at least 3-6 months before jumping into iodine supplementation. Otherwise, your body may not have the resources to back up the increase in metabolism and you could end up feeling worse in the long run.
If someone is under a lot of stress, we often recommend waiting or doing a very low dose of iodine so they don’t stimulate their system too much.
We like to have out clients complete a hair mineral test to see what their mineral levels are. If minerals are very low, especially calcium, you need to be cautious with how much iodine you use.
We also like to see a full thyroid blood panel (TSH, free T34 free t3, reverse T3, antibodies) to not only make sure iodine use is appropriate but also get guidance on how much someone may need.
We sometimes have clients utilize iodine loading urine testing depending on where they live, their health history, and how much iodine we plan to use.
