During my first pregnancy, one of my biggest obsessions was homemade limeade adrenal cocktails. I don’t know what it was, but I craved limes like I never have before.
Before I go into this pregnancy version of the adrenal cocktail, know that ANY version is going to be helpful during pregnancy. This is just one I have found particularly enjoyable and helpful for heartburn.
So why is this adrenal cocktail so great for pregnancy?
1. It’s a higher amount of potassium, sodium, and whole food vitamin C. You might notice I increased the amounts compared to the typical adrenal cocktail recipe. This is on purpose.
Pregnancy is a stressor and increases both our micro and macronutrient needs. We also need to be mindful of hydration, and there’s no better way to hydrate than with additional minerals. I typically drink at least 3 of these a day, which might sound like a lot, but I don’t wake at night to pee and am never excessively thirsty.
2. It contains some form of bicarbonate from either baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or magnesium bicarbonate. The bicarbonate helps reduce symptoms of reflux, which tend to pop up during pregnancy due to the hormonal shifts and a growing belly.
Because it contains this bicarbonate that neutralizes the pH of the stomach, it provides short-term relief from reflux symptoms. If you decide to add some form of bicarbonate to your adrenal cocktails, you want to drink them away from food.
