Thyroid and your hormones

Are you dealing with irregular cycles, amenorrhea, a consistently short luteal phase, or periods that are too heavy/light? 🩸

If you answered yes, it might be worth looking into your thyroid health. Low thyroid function is what I deal with most commonly in the clients I work with, but both hypo- and hyperthyroidism can impact your cycle.

How does thyroid function impact your hormones/cycle?

1️⃣ Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone (TRH) directly impacts the ovaries. If we have an increase in this hormone due to low function, it can increase prolactin and cause amenorrhea (a missing period).

2️⃣ Low thyroid function (hypothyroidism) can alter Steroid Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) and Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GRH), impacting ovarian function and disrupting the adrenals. This can further interrupt thyroid function. (A nasty cycle!)

3️⃣ Low thyroid function can delay ovulation, which is how we make progesterone. When we have higher estrogen levels relative to progesterone, we start to see hormonal symptoms appear.

The best way to combat all of this? Support your metabolism! If our metabolism slows, so does our digestion—which means less digestive enzymes and acids to break down our foods, causing less nutrient absorption. We need nutrients to build our hormones! Detoxification pathways also slow down and can lead to an accumulation of estrogen.

Either way, nourishing and supporting your body from the ground up can make all the difference in your healing journey.
