Ive used iodine myself and with clients for the last 4 years. It’s one of my favorite minerals because it is therapeutic on so many levels. I have great conversations with course students about their experience with iodine and I wanted to share a couple in this post. I want to preface this with mentioning that not everyone needs iodine. You also don’t want to supplement blindly or without the cofactors. I cover all of the benefits, myths, and so much more in my Iodine: The Miracle Mineral podcast episode. If you haven’t listened to my iodine deep dive podcast episode, you can do that here.
The first conversation I had with a Master Your Minerals course student was about thyroid labs and seeing changes while taking iodine. She started her mineral journey after she got thyroid blood work done and was told her TSH was a little elevated. It wasn’t high enough for her doctor to want to prescribe thyroid medication and she wants ready to take that step, so she started researching her options. That’s when she found my Free Functional Thyroid Series (a thyroid mini course). There she learned about the different root causes of thyroid dysfunction. She dove right in, got a hair test and started going through the Master Your Minerals course. She also got her free t4, free t3, reverse t3, and antibody levels tested since her doctor only looked at her TSH.
She quickly learned that she wasn’t making enough thyroid hormone or converting it well, so it made sense that her TSH levels were high. Her brain was not sensing enough thyroid hormone, so it’s trying to tell her thyroid to make more. The problem was that she had deficiencies in many minerals that impact how we make and convert thyroid hormone. She also had elevated levels of calcium, which can make it harder to get thyroid hormone inside the cells. So even if she did take thyroid medication, it wouldn’t have solved all her problems.
She knew she wanted to eventually take iodine since I discuss its importance and how to know if you’re deficient inside the MYM course. She also knew she needed to prepare her body if she wanted to benefit from it. This meant she had to work on reducing her daily stressors that were within her control. She also tracked her food to ensure she was eating enough. From there, she started the iodine cofactors and added in iodine. She knew it would take time to see significant changes in her thyroid labs but she was excited.
After 3 months of a low dose of iodine, she had her first pain free period and no spotting leading up to her period. This was a shock because it wasn’t why she started the iodine. I explained that she is likely having a stronger ovulation and making more progesterone since she is making more thyroid hormone. That helps balance out estrogen and can help with those symptoms.
She redid her thyroid labs and her free t4 and free t3 levels both improved. Her TSH was higher, which is normal and expected with iodine. Why? Because it allows that iodine to get used properly. You want TSH to go up initially. She knew this would be the case since I cover this in the iodine lessons, but it was still hard to see on paper. I reminded her that her cycle changes are a great sign and that her body is making more thyroid hormone based on her t4 and t3 levels, so the iodine is working. I share this because even when things go as planned, sometimes we need a little pep talk to help keep us on the right path. Also because while she wanted to improve thyroid function specifically, she was also able to improve her cycles, which is a huge win! It’s a great reminder that nothing happens in isolation in the body.
The second conversation I had was with another master your minerals student, who is also a close friend of mine. She recently gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and sent me a picture to share (baby spam-my favorite kind of messages). We were chatting about how she felt and what supplements she was taking/if she needed to change anything. She let me know she was still taking the same supplements and that she will never stop iodine 🤣 at least not until she’s done breastfeeding. You might be wondering why she is so attached to this mineral. She unfortunately went through multiple pregnancy losses before getting pregnant with her daughter. She has a history of subclinical hypothyroidism and low progesterone. She tried taking medication and bio identical progesterone after her first pregnancy loss to avoid it in the future, but she sadly experienced one more before her most recent pregnancy. I never want to push hair testing or health changes on people in my life, so I let her know that I’m here to talk about her options when she’s ready. It took 6 months until she was ready to do testing and TTC again, which I think was honestly a break her mind and body needed.
She tested her hair and discovered she had quite a few signs of iodine deficiency, which wasn’t surprising given her history with thyroid health. I explained how important iodine is for thyroid health but also our reproductive organs, follicular fluid, literally everything having to do with pregnancy.
She started up her iodine protocol and bio identical progesterone just in case they ended up conceiving. Four months later she texted me that she was pregnant 😭 she was excited but also scared to get her hopes up, which I understand. I reassured her that her body is prepared for this and that things were different this time. I continued to provide reassurance every doctors appointment when her provider would freak about her TSH levels since iodine makes it higher. They tried to get her to take medication to bring it down but she didn’t want to over do it since she was already taking iodine. Plus her other levels are good and she felt better than she had in a while. It’s still not easy to go against what your doctor recommends. I told her to do what she feels is best for her body and to follow her gut. I’m proud to say she did just that and had a healthy pregnancy and now has a beautiful baby girl.
I think you you can see why she’s attached to iodine. It not only helped her have a healthy baby but the process also brought her closer to herself. If you’re reading this, Sarah, I’m really proud of you!
Iodine is a very important nutrient, especially when it comes to women’s health. It’s also a nutrient that we need to respect when it comes to supplementation. It’s powerful and can be overdone. We need to educate ourselves on how to take it, what it needs to be taken with, and when it’s appropriate. I don’t want to encourage anyone to blindly supplement, but if you’ve been struggling when it comes to your thyroid health or hormones, I hope this sparks curiosity and investigation.
