5 jobs of the thyroid

When I think of women’s health and fertility I think of optimal thyroid health. If you haven’t heard of the OAT axis (or the ovarian-adrenal-thyroid axis), it’s the communication between these three major glands in the body that basically run everything.

When one of the glands isn’t functioning properly, the whole system falls apart. This is why so many women notice hormonal imbalances when their thyroid is off and metabolic issues (controlled by the thyroid) when their adrenals are over-taxed.

Whether you’re dealing with fatigue, anxiety, depression, irregular periods, acne, hair loss, and more…nine times out of ten, the root cause stems from chronic stress. After a while, the constant stress ultimately prevents our ovaries, adrenals, and thyroid from communicating like they’re supposed to and negatively impacts the body as a whole.

We know that years of stressors (read: undernourishing, overexercising, lack of rest or sunlight, constant stimulation, trauma, halogen exposure, etc.) don’t disappear overnight, but one critical aspect of healing is giving your thyroid the micronutrients it needs to function well.
