Hair mineral testing is an accurate way to assess trace minerals. There is research that shows many minerals are more accurately tested through the hair, as well as heavy metals. The issues with inaccuracies in hair testing often come from lab methods for testing. For example, some hair testing labs wash the hair sample. You do NOT want the lab to wash your sample. This is why I only recommend two labs as of this recording for hair mineral testing (Trace Elements and Analytical Research Labs).
There are many signs that can point to a mineral deficiency, as minerals are what make our body function properly. To find out if you could be at risk of a mineral deficiency, take our quick mineral imbalance quiz.
Minerals cause all reactions in the body, so hair testing is helpful for anyone on their healing journey struggling with hormone imbalances, hypothyroidism, PCOS, endometriosis and coming off birth control.
Yes, you can still do a hair mineral test if you’re on hormonal birth control.
Yes, you can still do a hair mineral test if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. You’ll need to pay attention to supplement recommendations and what is/isn’t safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding.
No, you can do a hair test at any time in your cycle, as it shows the last 3 months of information.
A hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) measures the mineral content of the hair. A sample shows what’s going on inside a person’s cell over the last 3 months, like which nutrients are being used up in response to stress or other physiological processes happening inside your body. We can also use a HTMA to learn about our digestion, blood sugar and thyroid.
Bloodwork is not as helpful, as it looks at the activity outside of the cell. It only gives a snapshot of when the sample was taken.
Hair mineral testing requires one hair sample weighing approx 100mg. This is equivalent to one heaped tsp of hair. It is ideal to take the sample from the middle-lower part of your head so you can cover it easily. The hair sample needs to be 1.5” long.
