Thyroid Health on an HTMA vs Blood Work

Concerned about your thyroid health, but confused by your labs? When it comes to thyroid health, it’s important to look at it from a few different angles. I like using your symptoms and metabolic markers (basal body temp or BBT), hair mineral testing, and blood work.

Blood work is the traditional way to look at thyroid health, but what is it really telling us? Blood work is telling us how much thyroid hormone your thyroid is making, how it is being converted, and if your brain is sensing that you are making enough.

What blood work is the most important when it comes to the thyroid?
-TSH: thyroid stimulating hormone–made by your pituitary gland and tells your thyroid it needs to make more thyroid hormone; optimal is .5-2 (<2.5 during pregnancy)
-Free T4: inactive form of thyroid hormone–shows us how much thyroid hormone your thyroid is producing; optimal is 1.4-1.8
-Free T3: active thyroid hormone–shows us how much thyroid hormone is being converted; optimal is 3.5 and higher
-Reverse T3: puts the breaks on thyroid hormone conversion–indicates stress; optimal is less than 15
-Thyroid antibodies: indicate if autoimmune condition is present; goal is negative

Another way to assess thyroid health is via mineral status. There is a thyroid mineral ratio on the hair mineral test, but there are also a number of other minerals that impact how our thyroid functions.
-Calcium: High levels bind to iodine receptors and make it difficult for thyroid hormone to bind
-Potassium: Low levels have been shown to be present in those with hypothyroidism and can lead to the depletion of other important minerals
-Magnesium
-Selenium
-Copper
-Zinc
-Iron
-Mercury levels

Ideally, we are assessing thyroid health from a number of angles in order to best understand where the dysfunction is.
