About 6 weeks postpartum, I got food poisoning. I’d never had it before and it was rough. I was up all night throwing up. Thankfully Amaia slept til 4am that night (a true miracle). It was the last time she ever slept that long without waking. The next night after I lay her down about 1 hour later I heard her choking and gargling. I tried burping her but she was extremely upset, so we got up. I did all the things to calm her down, make her happy, and get her to sleep. A little while after laying her down, she’d be up again. She woke up every 1-2 hours for 3 nights and I was a mess. She was constantly trying to nurse and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong until I started Googling her symptoms and realized she has reflux. She wasn’t spitting up because she was swallowing it, so I wasn’t sure at first, but it was definitely reflux. I knew it had to partially be from the food poisoning. My gut was definitely impacting her’s. She also had been having a bit of a hard time staying latched during letdowns. She was getting air in and it made her gassy, which can also worsen reflux symptoms. This led to a focus on three areas:
We focused on lip and tongue tie revisions first. This meant we were prepping her with oral exercises, stretches, and a lot of body work in order to gain as much function as possible prior to the release. Her lip was the most important since it was pretty tight, but we decided not revise her tongue as well. We did not do this with our first daughter, but felt it was the best decision for Amaia at this time. So I don’t think all ties need to be released, I think everyone should address whole body stress and tightness first, but I’m happy we got her’s done.
Once I felt like I had more capacity, I did a stool test and then started a modified gut protocol. One thing that happened while we were in this whole process was Amaia started to get nummular eczema (circles) all over her body. I thought it was ring worm at first but remedies didn’t work and then I brought her to our pediatrician, who confirmed it was eczema. I knew my gut was impacting hers along with stress from not sleeping. Two weeks after starting my gut protocol her skin started to clear up. Her reflux was already improving from the lip and tongue release and all of the body work, but it got even better. Once she was 4 months old, the reflux was pretty much gone and her skin had cleared. We have since introduced foods and she hasn’t had any reactions and has been able to eat really well. It was quite the journey but it all turned out okay and pushed me to learn more about baby reflux.
