Histamine Intolerance 101

This is a topic I get a lot of questions about. Many of us reach this stop on the healing train especially as we are adding in healing foods like citrus, bone broth, apple cider vinegar, etc.

Maybe you start to notice a rash, congestion, period cramps, changes in digestion, heart palpitations, or even difficulty sleeping. I’m not saying histamine intolerance causes all of these all the time, but these are common symptoms of a histamine build up in the body, scroll below for more.

If you have a history of gut issues, excess estrogen, and/or certain nutrient deficiencies like copper, vitamin B6, vitamin C, or iodine, then it could be a build up of histamines that is leading to symptoms.

The interesting thing about histamines is that they can bind to many different receptors in the body, impacting many different systems. This can lead to symptoms changing on a daily basis and can make healing very confusing.

Sometimes our immune system is so far gone that we feel like we are reacting to everything: every food, supplement, etc. Nothing feels safe anymore. This is a big red flag and a sign that there’s a possible histamine issue.

It’s important to note that histamines are not bad. We need them. They are an important part of how our immune system alerts our body of an allergen. It’s when we have a build up because of an underlying imbalance that causes issues.

The other interesting thing about a histamine intolerance is how it can lead to burnout. Our body’s natural response to an excess of histamines is to release cortisol (our stress hormone). Overtime, an excess of histamines leads to an excess of cortisol, which leads to downstream hormone imbalances and fatigue.
