Health Concerns In Children

Strategies To Support Health Concerns In Children

When it comes to children’s health, we can apply a lot of the same principles that we use for ourselves and they are typically even more effective. Children are still constantly growing and changing, especially their gut microbiomes, so whenever you add something in, I always say just pick one thing and give it some time. Just like adults, we don’t have to be perfect with new habits, nutrition changes, or supplement support to see results.

Supporting Digestion

When we have concerns like reflux, eczema, or constipation, the number one thing we want to start with is supporting digestion. This helps support healthy bowel movements, reduces inflammation calms the immune system, and can reduce reflux symptoms right away. There are a few ways to do this:

  • Reduce stress around meal times. This will mean different things for different children, but one thing I like doing is incorporating music. Singing is a great way for kids (and adults) to activate their vagus nerve, which supports digestion.
  • Encourage your children to chew their food. This one typically comes from how you are eating and modeling your behavior. Slow down yourself and that will help your children slow down too.
  • You could consider something like a chewable digestive enzyme to see how that helps your child’s symptoms.

Soothing Inflammation

Supporting digestion is the first step to soothing inflammation, so don’t skip that part. After you do that, you can consider incorporating something like aloe vera inner leaf juice. You can use this topically for eczema as well as orally for reflux, eczema, and constipation. It can help reduce inflammation in the gut and support digestion. It also soothes inflamed skin. Just make sure you use some sort of lotion on top to protect the skin barrier after.

Light Exposure & Outside Time

Most children want to be outside anyway, but making it a point to get some natural light in their eyes in the morning and playing in nature is helpful for their circadian rhythm, which also supports their digestion and gut health. Getting time in nature barefoot provides an opportunity for grounding and can even reduce inflammation in the body. Most parents are outside with their kids daily, but I wanted to add this in case you need extra encouragement to make that happen.

I hope this has been helpful! If you want more details on how to support health concerns in children, you can watch my bonus podcast episode inside Patreon.
