One aspect of gut health that I see a lot of women struggle with is stomach acid levels and digestion in general. Having adequate levels of stomach acid is crucial for our gut and overall health for the following reasons:
1. It’s our first line of defense against pathogens in the gut.
2. It ensures we breakdown our food properly, which allows it to move through our digestive tract, feed beneficial bacteria, absorb nutrients properly, and then eliminate.
If someone is struggling with low stomach acid, which often shows up as bloating, burping, constipation, reflux, nausea while taking supplements, undigested food in stool, then it’s important to get to the root cause.
There are a number of possible root causes, and often times, there’s more than one:
-low thyroid/metabolism
-H. pylori infection
-mineral deficiencies
-certain medications
-vegan/vegetarian diets
Inadequate thyroid hormone is a very common one, watch my free thyroid training to learn how to support your thyroid.
H. pylori infections are very common, but they are not all symptomatic. You can get tested through stool, blood or breath tests. Scroll through the image above to see treatment options.
Minerals are also essential for stomach acid levels. They support our thyroid, but they also make up stomach acid. Scroll the above image for more!
Ultimately, supporting digestion is an important part of supporting both your gut and hormone health. I like utilizing bitter foods & digestive bitters as a way to do this. See this blog for more on this!
