In this podcast episode with Loren De La Cruz, one of the big topics we covered was controversial foods during pregnancy. These often include:
-sushi/raw fish (parasites, listeria–can pass through placenta)
-tuna (high in mercury)
-deli meat (Toxoplasma, E. coli, Listeria, and Salmonella)
-soft cheeses (Listeria)
-rare meat (Toxoplasma, E. coli, Listeria, and Salmonella)
-runny eggs (Salmonella–turns out the biggest risk of exposure is in the shells)
-raw dairy (Listeria, Salmonella, E. coli, and Campylobacter)
-beef liver (high in vitamin A–in reality, 1/3 of women are deficient in vitamin A when they enter pregnancy, so is this really an issue?)
A lot of women don’t even realize that they are supposed to avoid some of these foods and then feel terrible when they find out. It’s important to recognize that the risk of exposure for many of these is very low. If you trust where your food is coming from and practice food safety when preparing food, your risk is significantly lower. We discuss the statistics in greater detail for each in this week’s podcast episode.
Another big topic that we get a lot of questions about is anemia during pregnancy. Loren breaks down why anemia occurs naturally during pregnancy, but also sheds light on cases of true anemia and what could be the cause.
We hope this helps you remove some of the confusion around nutrition during pregnancy and empowers you on your journey!
Curious about the connection between pregnancy and your mineral needs? In this podcast episode, I discuss the shifts that happen with your minerals during this time and how to support them.
