Compensation: The Root of All Hormone Imbalance

I get a lot of questions around how to balance hormones and while it is helpful to have specific lab results, information from cycle tracking, and a food journal, what’s also important is to understand where the heck hormone imbalance starts in the first place.

Our bodies want to be healthy and in homeostasis (balance), but it’s hard to do that when we live in an unbalanced world. It’s usually not just one thing that causes a hormone imbalance. It’s that our bodies are already compensating so much that eventually they cannot adapt anymore.

Major Contributors To Compensation

These are the most common contributors that I see adding up and eventually leading to compensation in the body:

  • Under eating
  • Highs and lows in blood sugar from not eating enough/not eating balanced meals/eliminating macronutrients
  • Poor sleep quality or not enough sleep
  • Excessive mental/emotional stressors that add up over time or one big stressor
  • Over exercising or lack of exercise (often going back and forth between the two)
  • Lack of optimal foods in the diet

Our bodies try to compensate and make up for these things by releasing our stress hormone, cortisol, which leads to us being in a chronically stressed out state. When we our bodies are in this stressed state for too long, here’s what happens:

  • Constipation/bloating/diarrhea
  • Fatigue that isn’t relieved by sleep
  • PMS, painful, heavy periods
  • Difficulty sleeping–waking during the night
  • Loss of appetite and/or cravings
  • Cold often because basal body temp drops
  • Acne

When the body is in a stressed state it is not prioritizing hormone production or digestion and puts an increased demand on the thyroid. This is why all of these symptoms begin to come up.
