Balancing iron and copper in endometriosis

Endometriosis affects at least 1 in 10 women of reproductive age and can have detrimental effects on the women’s mental, emotional, and physical health. Endometriosis was originally believed to be a hormonal condition.

With more recent research, we have realized how much the immune system plays a role. Another area that hasn’t been explored as much is mineral status, particularly how iron and copper levels impact the prevalence and severity of endometriosis.

A great systematic review digs into the impact of iron on oxidative stress in those with endometriosis. The research looks at iron metabolism and how iron accumulation increases the amount of inflammation in the body and leads to an increase in endometriosis lesions.

What helps keep iron in motion and supports proper iron metabolism? You guessed it—copper! Specifically, Ceruloplasmin or Cp helps to ensure that iron stays in motion and doesn’t accumulate in the tissues.

Endometriosis is a nuanced disease, but I genuinely hope research on how micronutrient status impacts it continues to be done to expand how we approach care for these women.

I love hair mineral testing for those with endometriosis because you get a look at their digestive markers, iron and copper, and overall how stressed/depleted the body is. Chronic health conditions like endo take a huge toll on the body. Supporting minerals can improve your body’s resiliency.

If you are struggling with what to do next on your healing journey, I highly recommend you consider enrolling in the Master Your Minerals course. This will allow you to order a hair mineral test and get answers and solutions for what to do next.
