How the thyroid sets the pace for our cells

Thyroid health can be so confusing, especially because you don’t need to be diagnosed with a thyroid disorder to suffer from thyroid issues. Hypothyroidism or sluggish thyroid is incredibly common–see the symptoms in the last slide.

Your thyroid is a 🦋-shaped gland that powers every cell in your body. It sets the pace for your body to function and operate. Like a car engine, it produces the needed amount of energy to move at whatever speed you want—and it does this by producing thyroid hormones that prompt your cells to function at a specific metabolic rate.

Your thyroid needs “fuel” to make these hormones and to convert T4 (inactive thyroid hormone) to T3 (active thyroid hormone). The “fuel” is a combination of vitamins (A, C, and B especially), minerals (iodine, copper, zinc, magnesium, and iron), glucose, and amino acids.

Like cars, our bodies also have an “accelerator” that controls how fast it goes. This is the pituitary or master gland. It is located at the base of your 🧠 and regulates your thyroid function, as well as other glands and parts of the endocrine system. The pituitary and thyroid glands work together to put hormones into the blood, where they are then carried to different organs for optimal functioning.

Thyroid hormones:
🦋 Control metabolism.
🦋 Can slow down or speed up your heartbeat.
🦋 Can raise or lower body temperature.
🦋 Affects how fast food moves through the digestive tract.
🦋 Controls how muscles contract.
🦋 Affects production of follicles and ovulation.
