Copper isn’t just important for iron use in the body.
I have talked about how copper is the key to preventing and improving iron deficiency. This is because copper plays a huge role in iron metabolism and helps iron fulfill its many roles in the body.
Copper also works in many other ways to support our overall and hormone health.
One of the most important things that copper does is helps us create and extract energy from the foods we eat. Without adequate copper, we have a hard time making enough energy and can deal with more fatigue.
Copper also protects the body from oxidative stress, which means it helps reduce inflammation and disease within the body.
We also use copper when getting rid of excess serotonin. While serotonin is a stress-coping hormone, it can actually have negative impacts on mental health and digestion when we have too much.
Copper also supports specific parts of our immune system and plays a key role in keeping us healthy.
Copper also works with other nutrients in the body. Vitamin C is an especially important one. Copper works with vitamin C to strengthen collagen and support bone health.
Copper also works with vitamin C to support our adrenals and help them make enough adrenalin in order to appropriately respond to stress.
Another big one for our hormone health is how copper impacts thyroid hormone production. It works with vitamin C to tell the brain that we need to make thyroid hormone. This then signals the thyroid and helps support our metabolism and sex hormone production.
How do you get adequate copper? Here is a blog post that discusses different copper-rich foods.
