Nutrition support for detoxification

It’s common to want to focus on specific herbs and supplements that will help support detox, but step 1 is always making sure your body has the basics.

Detoxification is one of hundreds of functions your liver does. If you want it to detox properly, give it the nutritional support it needs. ⁣⁣


⁣This includes:⁣⁣
1️⃣Eating enough food (we talk about this in this podcast episode of the Are You Menstrual? Podcast, but you can also swipe above to see signs you’re eating enough)

2️⃣Minimum of 100g of protein daily –amino acids help to fuel both phase 1 and 2 of detoxification. If we really dig deep, they also help support digestive enzymes and juices, so that means we need adequate protein for all 3 phases of detoxification.

3️⃣Some type of whole food carb (roots, fruits, plantains, yuca, etc.) at meals and snacks⁣⁣. Carbs are just as important as protein since they breakdown to glucose, which is our body’s preferred fuel source. If we don’t eat carbs, our bodies will find another way to make them, which increases stress hormones and takes the focus away from detox. Eat your carbs!

4️⃣Eating mineral rich foods like beef liver or taking a supplement: this contains copper and vitamin A, which are essential for utilizing iron. When we don’t have enough copper and vitamin A, iron can accumulate in the liver. It also provides an abundance of B vitamins. Learn more about copper and iron in episode 6 of the Are You Menstrual? 5️⃣Adrenal cocktails–provide whole food vitamin C⁣⁣ and help ensure your body is hydrated. Water is always emphasized for detox, but minerals aren’t and we need them in order to absorb that water properly.

6️⃣Fiber! Fiber helps bind to bile and remove it from the body through our stool. This helps eliminate toxic bile and reduces toxic burden on the body.
