Menopause Myths

While menopause symptoms can be annoying and can impact someone’s quality of life, we also have to dig deeper into what’s happening as a whole to women’s health as they enter into menopause.

Women are going from producing a robust amount of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone to a slow decline in that as they reach peri-menopause and then a complete halt as they finally enter menopause and are no longer cycling.

This doesn’t just impact things like our mood, libido, weight, hair, etc. It also impacts our brain function, bone health, heart health, gut microbiome, immune system, breast cancer risk, and more.

Women deserve to feel good and be healthy after they stop cycling. This is where changes in nutrition and lifestyle come in:

  • Prioritizing enough protein at every meal and including dense animal proteins. This not only supports your thyroid, blood sugar, and stress levels but also provides important vitamins and minerals.
  • Adjusting carbohydrate intake based on your activity levels. As hormones decline, our tolerance to carbohydrates can too. This doesn’t mean no carbs, and I wouldn’t recommend a no carb approach, but increasing protein and eating moderate to low carb is a great place to experiment. Find what allows you to feel your best!
  • Strength train even if you’ve never done it before. It’s NEVER too late.
  • Be mindful of your light exposure. Get natural light in your eyes in the morning and block artificial blue light at night.

I talked about all of this with Maria and Kristin from Wise and Well on my podcast. The last big area we focus on is hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which is very controversial because context is usually missing when it is discussed. Maria and Kristin get into all of the nitty gritty details, studies on benefits vs. who should avoid, and more.

This is what Maria and Kristin teach on their platform and in their new book The Great Menopause Myth, which I cannot recommend enough. You can find it on Amazon! Learn more from Maria and Kristin in the two podcast episodes I did with them below.

reminder: i’m currently taking on 1:1 clients. if you’d like to explore what it would be like to work together and if we are a good fit, fill out this form to get more details!
